Creating your own website can be fun and frustrating. Here are some sites to help you find backgrounds, designs, and music or a designer.
You must write the book. Whether a short 5000 word story or a 100,000 word epic. It does require a great deal of determination to complete a project.
Edit your story. If it takes you a hundred read-throughs, you must have it as perfect as you are capable of doing.
The Blue Book of Grammar & Punctuation
If it doesn't seem you've done enough, you probably haven't.
Generally a good working plan at editing is to put the story aside and forget about it. I usually give a couple weeks between edits and work on another story. Then, with fresh, untired eyes, I read the manuscript again.
It's definitely a good idea to read the story out loud. Not mouthed, but as if you were reading it to someone. The smallest overlooked flaws will appear to be enormous at this point like a neon flashing sign. If you want the story read to you, try a text to voice program.
Remove passive words such as that, was, and been. Reword sentences to remove them, in some instances all you need do is drop the words and the sentence will remain in tact.
Limit narrative, giving information in the dialog.
Use language pertaining to the timeline and be creative, not repetitive with words.

Take advantage of places to post your name and website. Do you belong to any yahoo groups? Check and see if they have a links section where you can add your name and your link. Many writers over look this place so don't be afraid to be the first to add your name.
Create your own banners.
Join reader loops in your genre. Most of what you'll find on my site deal with romance, but much is very generalized.
Yahoo has thousands of loops. Some highly popular. I have my list on this page of some of the loops and forums I belong to.

Just because you're published electronically, there's no reason you can't promote the old fashion print method.
Take an ad out in a magazine or newspaper. It's helpful if your book coincides with an event. A Christmas story during December, a murder mystery set at a carnival can be sold during fair season in your county.
Mail postcards to friends, family, and associates. These are usually the first people you can sell to on curiosity alone.
Drop your business card into outgoing mail such as bills, correspondence, etc. Someone is opening that envelope. Even a secretary reads.
